Senior drama student, Sonia Alonzo Ocaña, takes the directing and writing side in directing her student written one act, “Dreamers Like Me.”
Every year, the Omaha Burke High School drama department allows a student to submit their written piece to be able to direct it next year on Burke’s stage.
Chosen for this year’s student directed and written one act was Alonzo Ocaña, Historian on the Burke Thespian Board.
“I did a stage reading in January at a state festival and then like a month later, Mrs. Mo (Emily Mokrycki) told me if I was interested in her co-directing my play.” Alonzo Ocaña said.
Mrs. Mo is the drama teacher at Burke and is helping as an assistant director for the student directed one act making sure all the properties are set for the play.
“It’s been always an incredible opportunity for a student who wrote the piece, you get to see their piece fully realized.” Mokrycki said.
Since the beginning of the play’s rehearsals, the students have grown fond of the play and as well as with each other by working together to perfect the scenes.
“It’s like a tightened community. We spend a lot of time together because everybody is together after school for a long time.” Isaiah Jacobson said.
The students were in their tech week rehearsing to open Friday on December 13th, along with other one act plays like “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “Alice in Wonderland in 20 Minutes” which will also be directed by Burke drama students.
“I really do enjoy coming up with a storyline, and characters, and then doing it and imagining it in my head how we play out on stage” Alonzo Ocaña said.
