High school theater productions are more than just a chance to put on a show—they’re an opportunity to inspire students, showcase their talents, and expose them to new ideas and forms of art. I believe our school should attempt taking on Moulin Rouge-a musical that combines romance, spectacle, and popular music—this could be the perfect way to push boundaries, engage the community, and foster a sense of inclusivity.
The 2001 film Moulin Rouge —directed by Baz Luhrmann—has become iconic for its extravagant aesthetic, emotional storytelling, and groundbreaking use of music. It’s a tale set in the colorful and chaotic world of Paris’s famed Moulin Rouge nightclub, blending historical elements with a modern sensibility. The stage adaptation of the film brings the same electric energy and passion, making it a bold choice for any theater troupe.
“The combination of popular songs like ‘Roxanne,’ ‘Your Song,’ and ‘Firework’ is a perfect touch to the stories purpose” Jazmin Minard (11)
High school performers can also shine in a musical that demands a wide range of acting, singing, and dancing skills. “Moulin Rouge is not just a show about love, it’s about putting your heart into every number,You have to bring your A-game because the characters are so vivid. The passion and energy onstage is just so contagious.” Darwin Cloyd (11)
The heart of Moulin Rouge is its focus on love and self-expression, themes that resonate deeply with young people navigating identity, belonging, and relationships. In a high school setting, the musical can serve as a platform for discussing important social issues like the struggles of marginalized individuals, societal expectations, and finding your voice in the world.
“Moulin Rouge has a sense of inclusivity and openness to it that mirrors the diversity of a modern day high school” Mallorie Bauer (11)
