Burke High School has been remodeling the football field for a while. The stadium has been in the works for the last two years.
“I think my sophomore year I was kind of wondering why it was taking so long but overall coming into my junior year, being able to cheer on such a nice field, it was definitely worth the wait. I think it also helps us cheerleaders feel more connected with the student section because there’s a lot more people coming to the games. It just feels like we’re finally back at home,” Callie Huffman (11th) said.
There was a lot of questioning as to when Burke would be able to use their own field again. Football season was a bit weird last year considering we used our own field at first until we had to switch to using Northwest’s field. People did not want to travel from around Burke for home games to Northwest.
“I think the new stadium is lowkey cool. I mean we just use the field, so I don’t all the concessions stuff. I didn’t go to the concessions at the last game. The press box is really cool! I got to go up there. Just being able to be back on the field this year feels especially great. Using the baseball field for the last half of marching season last year was not good. We painted on the yard markers; they were off the next practice we had. There’s holes, and you’re used to marching on turf which is fake grass and so having to march on real grass was rough. It’s good for my last year, being able to use the football field,” Jonae Davis (12th) said.
The band members are especially glad the stadium has been finished as Davis stated. Marching on the baseball field after being on a football field the entire time couldn’t have looked pretty. Everyone is used to the dots they must get to (which is marked by the lines on the football field), and getting used to the painted markers which weren’t correct had to be frustrating.
It seems the student body is excited about the field coming back. I couldn’t put it any better. So in the words of Callie Huffman, it feels like we are finally back home.
