On September 26th, middle school bands from Omaha were invited to Burke High School to learn the fundamentals of marching band.
The event gave 8th grade students a chance to prepare for next year, when many will join their high school programs.
Burke section leaders guided the students by splitting them into groups based on instruments, such as brass, woodwind, percussion, and more. Each group was introduced to the marching basics, including how to move in step, how to march with their instrument, and some stretches.
I asked a section leader in the brass section about their thoughts on why they enjoyed teaching these middle schoolers about marching band.
“I enjoy teaching these middle schoolers about marching band because whenever you get to see them actually learn the thing, you can see the moment when it clicks in their head—about when they need to do it or how they need to do it. So that’s always a good thing to look up to in teaching.” Quinn McIntyre said.

The leaders’ passion was clear, and their focus inspired the visiting students, who practiced with discipline and concentration despite the hot weather. It was very impressive to see in person; it really shows the passion and determination of these students.
The day ended with a question-and-answer session, where middle school students had the chance to hear advice directly from the section leaders. Many asked about the most exciting parts of marching season and what they should be looking forward to. They also learned a little about color guard during the session.

One student, Miguel Ambrosio Fierro, shared his excitement about band. He said he enjoys “playing things, playing the music,” and he is definitely looking forward to next year.
Another student, Xander Dowling, echoed that enthusiasm. Xander has been playing his instrument since fifth grade, making this his fourth year in band. When asked what he is most looking forward to next year, he simply said, “The songs.” He also emphasized that performing the music is what he enjoys most about band.

The experience at Burke High School gave these middle school students a valuable preview of high school marching band life. Between learning the basics, getting advice from experienced leaders, and sharing excitement about the upcoming year, the day left students inspired and ready to take their skills to the next level.
“It is a really good environment, and everyone here really wants to learn and work hard, so it’s really fun.” Jimmy Fitl said.
