On September 26th, the cellists and bassists from the orchestra traveled over to University of South Dakota for the annual Cello/Bass Day.
Cello/Bass Day is an event in which cellists and bassists from all over the midwestern area gather to play together and learn techniques from college professors and other advisors.
One of the advisors who was sent to help these young musicians was Cara Elise Colón, a co-founder of the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico.
“It’s fantastic because they get to meet students from other schools. They can learn from kids who have been doing this more often and they can be inspired to try new things. Also, to look at opportunities for their future! They could come study here at the University of South Dakota,” Colón said.

Cello/Bass Day is an amazing day for all people involved. You get an opportunity to see what college has to offer and if you could pursue music as a career.
“I love Cello/Bass Day. It’s always a fun experience because we get to spend time with people from all over who play the same instrument and know what it’s like.” Lily Morris said.
The University of South Dakota hosting this day for young musicians is a significant opportunity for everyone. It shows these students what life after high school has to offer and that they do not have to stop playing when they graduate.
Although this is only the second time Burke students have attended, our cellists and bassists appreciate the time for their instrument to get the attention it deserves.
“Spending time with the teachers there is nice too, they know how to help us get better at the instrument we play. It’s even better considering the people teaching us all play the same instrument, so it shows they really do know.” Lily Morris said.
