Fans state the landing zone rule provides an unfair advantage and masks their ability. The landing zone is a great rule that encourages teams to run the ball while keeping the kick returner safe. More running and safer plays? Who would not appreciate that?
The ‘Landing Zone,’ implemented in place for the 2024 NFL season, that requires players receiving kickoffs to advance only 20 yards. This is not only great for the safety of players, but also promotes a more aggressive minded offensive mindset.
It allows for more touchdowns and reduces injury. Last season, there were blown calls and missed receptions that jeopardized player safety.
By comparison, there has been a 58% increase of successful runs this season and the number of injuries suffered on kickoffs is also well down. The kickoff return rate was 20% in 2023 season and has now skyrocketed to an almost incomparable 78% after just one week of simulated action. So, it is no surprise that players are gaining confidence with the ball in their hands.
While I can sympathize with fans who say this rule gives an unfair advantage to the team awarded possession, it does not demolish skill. However, kick returners still need to decide where they should go as far upfield and in less time vs. defenders competing for their own safety.
So, while it may allow 20 yards, would you rather chip a favorite player retires because of injury. Put yourself in the player’s cleats and ask if you would rather be at a pronounced disadvantage when trying to gain yards or both teams have an equal game but are more likely for either side?
In conclusion, I stay with my opinion that the newer ‘Landing Zone’ rule is an exceptional rule to keeping players safe and to encourage the kick returner to get more yards for your favorite team. And the fans that think its to much of an unfair advantage are false.
