Omaha Burke High School is filled to the brim with plenty of diversity and different people who always have residing stories behind what people always see.
Jasmine Allen is currently enrolled at Burke as a junior and is living the high school experience that Burke gives to their students.
But Burke wasn’t Allen’s first choice.
“My first choice was North (Omaha North High School), but I read the paperwork wrong and so I got put in Burke instead of North.” Allen said.
For middle school, Allen went to McMillan which is a small middle school in north Omaha. This is the reason why Allen was predicted to go to North since McMillan is a feeder middle school to North.
This disappointed Allen since the majority of her friends were prospected to go to North, causing Allen to start over again in a school in a different area.
“It was a little disappointing because all my friend were at North, but then I was also like, you know, maybe it’ll be a fresh start.” Allen said.
And a fresh start it was.
Allen luckily had some friends from McMillan middle school to support her at Burke, but the rest was up to her.
“I honestly thought that coming in high school was going to be like the hardest thing ever and everyone made it to be like this huge deal.”
Despite the fresh start, Burke opened up a new group of people to Allen as well as pursuing her interests like choir.
“I really liked singing, I like anything that involves music. The teachers that I’ve had have been really, really nice.” Allen said
Allen isn’t involved with much in Burke anymore as she has progressed, but that doesn’t stop her from having her own hobbies and interests outside of Burke’s walls.
“I draw, I color, I paint, I make jewelry, and I do a little bit of everything.” Allen said.
Allen has done a lot and experienced much more in her high school term at Burke, especially since her going to Burke was a fluke.
But despite that, Allen has not let that stop her from enjoying her time at Burke and meeting new lifelong friends that she always spends time together with when she gets the chance.
Allen is planning to graduate from Burke and immersing herself into the psychology field at Bellevue University.
What she plans to do at Bellevue University to study child psychology and help kids, adolescents, and provide therapy for families.
As a junior, she is still making her decisions, but has got a clear vision on what she wants to accomplish.
