Finding their passion for music at an early age, Jonae Davis (11) started with strings in the fourth grade.
Now, seven years later, Davis’ zest for the musical instruments has led her down a path with both the school band and orchestra.
“In fourth grade I had picked cello so I could be lazy and sit down and play. While the idea of playing music was cool to me, I never thought I’d keep doing it and improve as much as I have! It helped that I had teachers that helped me continue to grow to be my best.”
Just as strong of a passion for Davis, is her love of art. Davis loves to express themselves through their drawings and artwork.
I’m definitely not the best at art but its something about getting to express myself through painting. My aunt does a lot of arts and crafts so l look up to her and its one way i get to connect with her, even if I’m nowhere as good as she is. But in an aspect of performing arts aspect, it also deals with getting to express myself. Whether it. Be spinning my flag and performing on the field, or sitting on stage and swaying to the music, it just all connects to me and makes me feel at peace when I’m in my element.
When not by an instrument or sketch pad, Davis is also involved in color guard, which they really enjoy.
“This was an activity I joined solely because I had friends in it and the teacher was also my orchestra teacher so. But its a really hard sport and it takes a lot of trying to do something right. It also hurts, a lot. I remember the first practice i went home with three bruises and sore legs. Even with all this pain and mental drain, Guard has been one of the best experiences in my life and i love this group and activity.”
Davis has many strengths, but they do have a favorite. They love their creativity and ability to work with others.
“I think my greatest strength is being able to get along with people. I’m quite easy going and I’m a good listener, I also love my creativity and believe that is one of my greatest strengths.”
Davis knows music is where their heart is, they don’t have an exact idea of what they want to do but they know that music is the path they want to follow.
“I really want to be a musician, I love playing my cello and I have a passion for this. I eventually would like to transition into being a music teacher as well.”
