The Burke Poetry Club is a place at Burke that lets you express yourself and your emotions while helping you enhance your writing skills with friendly competition. Hannah Sudberry, an English teacher at Burke High School, is the one who leads the poetry club.
“The poetry club starts off like any normal club. We have prompts that the students use. We write different kinds of poetry.” Sudberry said.
The Poetry Club is also part of a large organization called All Writes Reserved (AWR). They are the main providers of the competitions that Burke students compete in. Sadly, last year Burke wasn’t able to make it to the next round, but Mrs. Sudberry hopes to make it further this year and create new memories with new groups of students.
“As it gets closer to those competitions, they pick a poem that they’ve read or they’ve written, and they tailor it to the competition to be able to speak it. They learn how to move with it and to be more confident with it.” Sudberry said.
