How Mrs. Cannon Feels About Her Seniors Leaving
As we know, the seniors leave May 8th. How does this affect the teachers who have them?
Mrs. Cannon is the choir teacher here at Burke, she teaches Honor Concert Choir, Mixed Chorus, and Show Choir. All together in her classes she has twelve seniors leaving, for choir that’s a big group of kids. While all teachers feel different about the seniors leaving, Mrs. Cannon has really grown as a teacher with these seniors leaving.
Cannon has taught at Burke for two years now, even though she only taught the last years seniors for a year doesn’t mean she feels any different for them just because she’s known them for a much shorter time. Getting to know these seniors for 4 years and then having them leave can get pretty hard if you taught them and learned something from them.
Having twelve choir students leave is a big thing for choirs because now you’re missing most or half of your choir. It can be challenging to move forward when that happens, especially on the students in that choir. As new school years come, the newer choir students come into the class, that helps choir go back to being normal, helps it go back to being the big choir it once was. It’s a cycle though, every year they’ll be seniors leaving and new students coming in, that keeps it somewhat balanced.
“Next year, I will have had those seniors for longer than I had any of them, I think it’ll get harder and harder every year for me to lose those kids.” Stefanie Cannon said.
The juniors this year will be seniors next year and have to plan for that year and after high school, they also have to say goodbye to their favorite teachers that really helped them through their high school years. Every student has at least one or two favorite teachers at this school, to be honest you may not even like a teacher or two, it all just depends on how your year goes.
“It makes me excited for them that they’re about to out into the world and experience the workforce, or college, or real life and getting to build their lives outside of high school.” Stefanie Cannon said.
