Schools are supposed to be a safe space for kids, when you bring something you’re not supposed to you put everyone there in danger.
All schools say that they prohibit weapons from entering the building, but just because there’s a sticker on the entrance doors saying that. A sticker doesn’t stop a kid from brining it in their backpacks. Kids bring things to school all the time, whether its school supplies or not, there’s really no way to know what they bring unless you see it, they show you, or you hear about it. Yes, there is ways that you can actively stop kids from bringing a weapon to school. Theres a weapon detection thing called Evolv, it’s like a metal detector as in it has a screening process that can detect weapons, it reduces the invasive pat-downs, and it keeps a more welcoming environment for the kids that are coming into the school.
Kids will say that it’s an invasion of property if you go through their backpack without reason, technically there is a reason, an important reason, the police need a warrant to check a backpack, but administrators and teachers do not. If a kid gives their consent for a backpack search than do it but if they don’t, then maybe keep asking and if they really don’t want to then get the police involved.
I’m one to say that do not just grab a kid’s bag without warning and just search it, kids still have the right for their privacy and their own stuff, but also say that if a kid doesn’t want to for long enough than get the police involved. A school setting, I do think that reasonable but if were outside of school that’s not a matter of the staff in the school, plus people on the street can’t just randomly check your bag.
I am one to say that having a device that can check or scan for a weapon can help make kids and staff feel safer. A way I think that can also prevent stopping weapons from coming in the school is by putting the Evolv device at all entrances just in case a student comes in the school without a weapon than tries to come into a different entrance with one.
If it’s just a random person outside who decided they wanted to make a bad choice and try to come to the school with a weapon, usually the doors are locked on the outside, as they should be. In the instance that the doors are not locked the detectors will go off if they detect a weapon and that can alarm people who hear it to get in a class or hide wherever they can. Also, if the detectors do get something, it could pop up on a computer so teachers can check it and if it isn’t a weapon than they can dismiss is, but if it shows up that it is a weapon than the staff could send it to the police.
I do think that could at least help prevent some violence in school and it could help make the students and staff safer at school. You can’t go that many days without hearing about something with gun violence and schools get threats whether hoax or not a lot of the time.
