What starts as a simple job cleaning, cooking and organizing for a wealthy family quickly turns into something far more disturbing.
A psychological thriller titled “The Housemaid” follows Millie Calloway, a woman who is desperate for a fresh start after a troubled past. When she is offered a live-in housemaid job for Nina and Andrew Winchester, it feels like a rare second chance.
The house is beautiful, the pay is decent, and Millie is determined not to mess up this opportunity. However, the longer she stays, the more things start to become weird.
It does not take her long to realize that something is seriously wrong inside the Winchester household. Nina is a person with erratic behavior and strikes many red flags. She has many strict rules and many emotional outbursts that create an uncomfortable environment, one that only grows more disturbing as the story goes on.
Millie is constantly walking on eggshells, trying everything possible not to upset Nina, and readers start to feel the same anxiety. The longer Millie stays in that house, the more the tension really starts to build. It makes you begin to wonder who actually is in control of the house.
This book was one that I found hard to put down because of Freida McFadden’s unique writing style. The chapters are short, fast-paced, and end in a way that made me want to read just one more chapter. Even if there wasn’t a dramatic scene, the book still felt intense, as there was so much that was left unsaid.
McFadden dropped many small hints that suggest there is something more going on behind the scenes, and those hints stick with you the whole time you’re reading.
What really stood out to me about this book is how it toys with trust. Characters seem almost harmless at first, when in reality they really aren’t who they seem. It really makes you question everyone’s motives, including Millie’s.
As I read, I was constantly trying to predict what would happen next. Sometimes I was right, but other times I was way off.
This is the kind of book that makes you want to talk about it as soon as you’re done reading it. The twists that happen don’t come out of nowhere, but they’ll still catch you off guard, as most of them are ones you wouldn’t expect.
Once secrets start to get revealed, everything starts to come together. Earlier moments in the book start to make more sense. You start to realize why some characters act out more than others, and you finally realize what really is going on inside the Winchester household.
Overall, “The Housemaid” is a suspenseful and engaging read that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It’s a book that’s perfect for readers who enjoy psychological thrillers, shocking reveals and stories that prove things aren’t always what they seem.
If you’re looking for a book that will keep you on your toes and make you think twice about first impressions, this one is definitely worth checking out.
