Going to to both the girls and boys basketball games, I didn’t expect to notice such a big difference, but I did almost right away. When I walked into the girls basketball game, the gym felt quiet. There were some parents in the stands and a small group of students sitting together, but the bleachers were mostly empty. The student section was small, and there wasn’t much noise. I also noticed there weren’t many people taking photos or recording videos. It felt calm, almost too calm for a competitive game.
The girls on the court were playing hard. You could see their effort in every play. They dove for loose balls, called out plays, and encouraged each other. Even with fewer people watching, they showed passion and determination. But I couldn’t help thinking that the low attendance might affect their motivation. When you work hard at something, you want people to notice. You want the gym to be loud. You want the same energy that other teams get.
Going to the boys basketball game the difference was obvious. The gym was packed. The student section was full and loud. People were standing, cheering, and chanting. There were more announcements, more hype music, and even more social media posts about the game. Photographers were on the sidelines, and it felt like a major event. The energy in the room was completely different.
Seeing both games back-to-back made me question whether girls sports really get equal attention at school. The athletes work just as hard. They practice the same number of hours and put in the same effort. However, the attendance, coverage, and promotion don’t always seem equal. Boys sports often receive more recognition and excitement, while girls sports sometimes feel overlooked.
In the end, I believe schools should promote all sports equally. More announcements, better social media coverage, and encouraging students to attend could help create a more balanced atmosphere. Every athlete deserves to feel supported. When the stands are full and the crowd is loud, it shows respect for the hard work these players put in every single day.
