Review: Paranormal, true crime podcast, a must-listen over the holiday break

Zoe Sanders, News Editor

In the past few years the world has seen a rise in interest in podcasts. Among the many podcasts that have become readily available recently, a plethora of true crime and supernatural have surfaced. And That’s Why We Drink is described as the best of both worlds; their Spotify claims that they are the place where “Murder and the paranormal finally meet!… Join us every Sunday for some chilling ghost stories and downright terrifying true crime stories.”

And That’s Why We Drink stars Los Angeles based Em Schulz and Christine Schiefer, two hilarious friends that bonded over their shared interest in true crime and paranormal stories. In addition to Schulz and Schiefer, Schiefer’s dog Gio is a regular guest and a fan-favorite addition to the show. Each Sunday they each take on a new story, with Schulz covering the ghostly side of things and Schiefer covering the real-life crimes of the world. They’ve covered cases such as the haunted Whaley House in San Diego and the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart in 2002.

Every episode is filled with outlandish humor, various personal anecdotes, and overall manages to cover serious topics while still adding wit and banter. Although humorous and fun, both Schulz and Schiefer make a point to acknowledge that each story they cover has real people behind it that were affected by these events directly; their shared comedy does not however overshadow or make light of the grievous topics they cover. Overall, the show captures the perfect balance of creepiness, seriousness and playfulness. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone who’s interested in true crime, the paranormal or anybody who’s looking for a lively podcast to binge this holiday season. You can find And That’s Why We Drink on Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play and Apple Podcasts.
