Many people think they have a right for what they said or for what they thought. They wouldn’t be wrong, but they also wouldn’t be right. Yes, you can think that, but you always must remember that everyone around you has their own opinion on any topic. Yes, you should be able to speak about what you want, but no you can’t be entirely biased in your opinion, you still need to be able to listen and respect other people’s opinion even if you don’t believe it.
No one should be afraid to speak out, no one should have to fear what could happen to them if they do. It’s not right that the government has a duty to prohibit “hateful” speech, it’s not right to imprison people for speaking out, even when every country’s constitution has the value of “free speech.” people could just be speaking on an opinion or giving a factual argument to something and they’ll get silenced, they want facts, they want the truth, they want opinions, it’s a judgement free zone, but is it really? They say, “freedom of speech,” “Freedom of expression” all I see shutting people up because you have the power to.
Freedom of expression also plays part in freedom of thought, conscience, and religion — that has allowed them to be able to flourish. It’s also linked closely to other rights that can fall into this right. Freedom of expression is exactly what it sounds like, the freedom to express yourself, the right to speak out and be heard. No one should be able to shut people up when they’re just being themselves or trying to be heard, that’s the whole point of freedom of speech and taking that away from people is the exact opposite of what it is.
You should have the right to say, make, and be what you want without someone telling you otherwise, there are certain scenarios where people should stop you if you’re going to do something bad and they know you are, than yes, you should get told not to, but under normal circumstances of someone making something, speaking on something political, or just speaking an opinion. That by itself isn’t a problem. If it is hateful to groups of people or just something of hate in general that it should be monitored.
Freedom of speech plays along into freedom of expression because they are very similar, freedom of speech is just more with speech, but there are things it isn’t and they are valid things, like not making or distributing obscene material, or not having students advocating illegal drug use at a school-sponsored event. These things may sound like they could fit into freedom of expression, but to me they aren’t even that either because those are both things that shouldn’t be promoted.
