Do you think LGBTQ things/relationships should be represented in school? Let’s talk about it.
While some people think they shouldn’t I definitely think they should considering in high school you’ll see a lot kids being more open with their sexualities and if they see that at school than it can make it more welcoming for them to see more people from the same community as them. I will say, for me it is a very welcoming and nice feeling when I see or hear about anything with the LGBTQ community considering I’m part of the community. But this isn’t me saying it should be taught in every school, that’s not what’s being said here, I’m only talking about it being represented in schools and how it can make the students feel.
“Among teens who say these topics have come up in the classroom, similar shares say they feel comfortable (29%) and uncomfortable (33%) when they come up.” Pew Research Center said.
While yes you have to look at if students are comfortable or uncomfortable with what is being said about LGBTQ in general. I don’t think it should be an uncomfortable topic to talk about with kids especially if there’s some who need that validation so they know its ok to like who they like without other people being disrespectful or uncomfortable about it. Sexuality should never be an uncomfortable topic for anyone since its just part of being human and if anyone has a problem with it than maybe their the weirdo. I know people bring religion into being gay and I don’t like that, why? Because its just wrong. No your not being possessed by the devil if you like the same sex as you.
“Wading into another culture clash, the Supreme Court on Friday ruled that school systems, for now, are required to provide parents with an “opt-out” provision that excuses their children from class when course material conflicts with their religious beliefs.” NPR said.
Yes, I respect other peoples religions and beliefs but I do think it’s a bit far if they make school systems HAVE to provide parents with opt-out forms because a book has gay characters in it. I don’t see how its necessary to require opt-out forms for books with gay characters if said character is in a book, that is just what I personally cant wrap my head around. There will be actual people in the LGBTQ community in schools and they aren’t hurting you, same with gay characters in a book, yes they may offend you but they aren’t hurting you in any physical manner at all.
“Most elementary school teachers (62%) say students shouldn’t learn about gender identity in school. This is much larger than the shares of middle and high school teachers who say the same (45% and 35%).” Pew Research Center said.
It would make sense that elementary teachers wouldn’t want it to be taught in schools or just elementary schools in general. Elementary kids are to young to understand or process if someone is a different gender than what they were at birth. For middle school and high school it’s a different story, with middle schoolers I can see how you might not want to teach them that since they can be very immature with serious topics like this and it could get pretty annoying with them being immature about it every time its mentioned. High schoolers are much more mature and could handle learning about these topics but not all of them are mature enough to even hear the word gay and make it a whole thing, especially high school boys. But at the end of the day it does come down to whether the teacher wants to discuss it or not, it doesn’t even have to be a big lecture either, it could just be the teacher saying, “this is a safe space for people of all gender, race, and sexuality.”
“In contrast, more say parents should be able to opt their children out of learning about sexual orientation or gender identity (48%) than say parents should not be able to do this (33%).” Pew Research Center said.
Gender identity is someone finding themselves for who they believe they are. If a kid who knew that they didn’t feel like they were in the right body and wanted to learn more about this and their parents just take them out of it because they wanted to opt them out of learning it. Parents have somewhat of a say in what they want their children to be learning but again at the end of the day the school decides what the teachers should teach but the parents do have an influence on their children and if that child is young than their mind can be shaped easily and they thoughts the parents put in that child’s head could stay there for awhile and that could make the kid scared to come up with their own thoughts on the matter because they didn’t want to disappoint their parents.
“In turn, a majority of teachers (58%) say their state government has too much influence over what K-12 public schools in their area are teaching.” Pew Research Center said.
