Winter has the worst qualities of any season for students; it’s easier to rot in bed than forcing themselves to have any sort of motivations.
The strong mood switch when seasons change especially when it hits winter might seem like a weird fluke but “winter blues” isn’t just an abnormal phenomenon there’s actually a name for it: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). NIH-funded researchers have been studying it for more than 3 decades and have concluded is more mild than more serious because it clears up in due time instead of sitting with you how other forms of depression usually do.
So many people develop these mood switches and get surges of. Worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness, and a feeling of lost interest and pleasure in doing things they normal would consider pretty funor homework they wouldn’t often miss they just have no will to do it. Without the willingness to keep up with the life still moving around them they start slipping mentally, emotionally, and academically. Winter just brings out the worst in individuals especially students who are accepted to be completely stable.
Classes when the winter blues hits just seems like a flood flushing through your house and destroying everything, and the assignments are just an even bigger pain, and when so many teachers expect you to keep up with everything they throw at you when you can barely keep up with your own brain would drain anyone and make them not want to do anything that requires them to actually having to try. It’s just too much. It’s cold and it gets dark at 5pm an absolute nightmare.
Students are allowed to be burnt out they’ve powered through this entire time to finally get closer to the halfway mark. It’s flu season and finals are coming up because winter break is close and school is going at a faster speed but the summative seem to be happening at the slowest speed possible and it’s just harder to keep up between everything going on. Winter is a leach that sucks out the motivation to keep going and not just mentally check out.
Nothing feels good in gloomy weather and having so many expectations is such a hassle and keeping up with life when being at home and being in bed is the easiest thing to do when socializing and keeping your life together becomes such a huge chore. Wintertime asks way too much from everyone especially from students.
