Art comes from the mind, and everyone is capable of creating art, but when it comes from the mind and travels to the tip of a pencil it is the perfect form of creativity.
Writing transfers raw thoughts, experiences, and emotions into a beautiful form of art and that makes writers artists. Writers paint with their pencils crafting words from their imagination and the world they see through their own eyes. They can create something from nothing because of their ability to create whole new worlds.
“As a writer, I have been slighted numerous times by people that don’t necessarily mean to be rude to me but are,” Gathman said. “They simply don’t understand the effort and skill required to write something that appropriately considers and appeals to the reader. In relation to my work in creative nonfiction, I’ve been asked ‘Is it really that hard to write about stories that happened to you?’ As if there is no skill in relating each new world and situation that a reader will face on the page.”
Teaching people the purpose of writing when they carry no passion of their own is a losing game. They complain too much about the mediocre work they end up creating, or they just completely downplay the writing process in general, and it’s disrespectful to people who do care about writing. People who don’t have to thrive see writing as super hard or just really easy, especially when it comes to poetry. It’s really often that someone will say writing poetry is super easy because they don’t get the concept of the creativity that poetry is.
“When teaching poetry to non-writers, it isn’t unheard of to overhear students claiming things along the lines of, ‘Poetry must be easy to write since it doesn’t make sense. All you have to do is rhyme.’ All of this why I’ve fought to keep creative writing in this building,” Gathman said. “Unfortunately, understanding the importance of human creation and the value of the written word is harder for those that do not consume written works like the writers that create them.”
Original pieces have such a big importance in society because they create such authentic work for writers to take inspiration from and readers to have a story that draws them in so deeply. Original work brings out people’s voices and tells such a bigger story than a straight-to-the-point AI story with no driven passion. Original writings foster diversity; challenge established ideas and create lasting emotional connections through the writer writing it and the reader reading them.
“Original writing is so important because language is how we communicate to one another.” English teacher, Derek Adams said. “Without a strong grasp of whatever language we speak/write in more problems in our culture and society arise. Writing strengthens those skills and those bonds both in our society and within ourselves as writers.”
Writers have a passion for leading them; that’s why human writing cannot be copied by AI. AI quite literally takes human writing and changes it up to an added prompt given by a human being. It doesn’t compare to the mind of a human being because it has nothing driving it but gallons of water. AI can’t harbor and create the level of passion that can be created from the human mind without a prompt and guidance from that same human being. AI can only go so far, and if writers don’t continue on their path, the written word will become a dull tragedy and, instead of a ban on books like in Fahrenheit 451, they will just go extinct.
“We’ve already seen that AI is not all it’s cracked up to be. It can be creative based on a prompt, but it’s never going to look or sound right,” English teacher, Hannah Sudberry said. “AI also only knows what is on the internet and is not technically creating new things but putting old things together. Passion is shown through tone and writing style, which is something AI cannot recreate. If we allow AI usage to continue down the path it’s going, written work is going to become monotonous and boring, Without the creative, unique spark of humanity, we miss out on a lot.”
