Would you allow your student to use AI in the classroom?
Almost all teachers have seen AI in a students work, whether the student is using it to help them understand a topic, or write an essay for them. It’s a problem, even if you may not see it as one. Now, students have been seeing their assignments get put through ai detectors to see if AI was involved in the assignment, but sometimes those detectors can be wrong and may say that there is ai involved when there actually isn’t.
Some journalism students may use AI to help them come up with interview questions, cause that is a hard thing to come up with sometimes, or they use it to fix grammar in their stories. Most teachers don’t allow it at all in their classrooms, and I can’t say I blame them. It shouldn’t be used in school other than coming up with questions or helping grammar. A student doesn’t learn anything if they’re using AI on their homework, we all have brains that hold amazing knowledge, you’re taking away that power if you’re using AI on all your work.
Not only does AI take part in destroying the planet, but it can also help with being dishonest in class about your work. If you say you wrote the essay but in reality, it was a whole bot that wrote it for you, that’s you lying about actually doing the work yourself and proving that you didn’t know what to write about for the essay, or just didn’t want to write it. While five paragraph essays may seem long or your math homework might be really hard for you. If you’re struggling, ask a parent or wait until the next day to ask your teacher about it. Do not resort to asking AI for an answer.
Asking to google now is practically the same thing as asking an AI bot because now goggle has an AI overview. I don’t think asking about a summary or key points of what happened in a chapter of a book is bad, while yes, you should read the book, but I don’t want to sound like a hypocrite, because I understand looking up a summary or key points if the book doesn’t click to you. Going back to using it for math questions, just ask a parent for help or the teacher, the teacher will be able to teach you better than the AI can. This isn’t me saying don’t use it entirely but use it for something useful instead of having it do your work for you.
“AI should be used for giving brainstorming ideas and not giving answers and not allowing kids the chance to learn by their teachers or learn independently,” Tajada Policarpe said.
Researching can sound like a daunting task if you don’t like the topic your researching, but you may learn something when you do the research for whatever topic you have. AI can tell you the answers you want, but that’s not being honest to your teacher if you add resources, you didn’t read. Schoolwork can be tiring and sometimes you may not even want to do it, I get that feeling, because I get it to. If you know that this work is worth a lot for your grade and will help a lot, then do it. That will bring a better outcome for you, than it would be just asking AI to do it for you, if that teacher were to run the assignment through a scanner and found out that you used AI, that would be so much worse for your grade than not doing the assignment at all.
Doing schoolwork, listening to your teachers, not being on your phone while you’re being taught, you can learn something from them. Doesn’t matter if you’ll use it in the real world, you may actually have to use it depending on what you want to do for work, there’s quite a few jobs that actually use math every day, may not be the specific “useless” thing you were learning but at least you learned it so you know for the future. Many things you learn in school will help you outside of high school, not everything is “useless”, or “dumb”, but actually helpful, an AI won’t be able to actually teach you something, it can give you answer, and maybe it’ll teach you the ways of how to do a math problem if you ask it to, but let’s be honest, you’re not asking it to teach you, you’re asking for an answer.
“I have never used AI for my schoolwork,” Emma Riegel-Stiles said. “I don’t think AI should be used in schools, it’s been shown that it frequently makes mistakes.”
