They’re changes in the environment, and of course there are opinions on if school policies are keeping up with the environmental changes.
Most schools don’t require teachers to turn off lights after they leave for the day and with those lights left on it wastes considerable electricity and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. It’s the same when it comes to the rapid charging stations in schools it accelerates the generation of electronic waste. When it comes to the water wastage it’s a heavier impact because of the fact schools are high-volume water consumers.
“With environmental changes we do need to make sure were doing a larger part in making school policies align with that. Trying to lower our usage of electricity, making sure that the teachers are able to turn all the lights off when they leave their classrooms, make sure that students can charge their devices at home, making sure that we’re not utilizing the charging stations at school for other devices besides your school issued iPads,” marine biology teacher, Alison Lane said.
When it comes to recycling it isn’t that mandatory in school buildings. There are recycling bins in classrooms and in the cafeteria, but it isn’t a consistent thing asked of students. Lots of students don’t even know what can be recycled and what can’t. There have been kids who treat the recycle bins like they are second trash cans and throw absolutely anything inside of it which makes it so inconvenient. It’s personally very frustrating if you don’t know what goes inside the recycling bin just don’t use it at all. The policy sets back environmental changes instead of making it better.
“I think that there needs to be a bigger push for recycling within the building. A lot of waste is found at the lunchtime, because there is an imbalance between how much food is required by the state to be pushed off to the students, and what the students are actually eating,” Lane said.
Schools contribute to the environment more negatively than positively especially with the development of AI and how many students use it to finish their assignments. That is contributing to the depletion of water resources and air contributors.
“AI affects the environment changes because it causes more carbon dioxide to go into the air and it’s a big impact on the world and global warming. The more students use it the hotter it’ll get,” Kaylee Margritz. “Guys it’s not that hard to use your brain.”
