Theres a good handful of people who see fast fashion as a bad thing and I will not lie I am with them. Fast fashion, yes it could be convenient for some people with that its cheaper, but that doesn’t make it good, does it? Nope. Let’s get into what fast fashion is. Essentially its cheaply produced products that are on trend, they are also cheap. I mean you’re getting what you paid a dollar for. Fast fashion is also the rapid rate at which clothes are being produced and distributed; it also includes the marketing of the clothes. So many of these clothes are made because companies see that people will buy them. Did you know that fashion production is 10% of total carbon emissions globally? Theres also a good chunk of pollution due to fashion production. While yes, fast fashion is made quick, that could also mean that the waste that comes with the production of it is huge.
I know I’m someone who gets rid of clothes I don’t wear, I also will not lie and say I don’t have any fast fashionable clothes, I do, I don’t buy them, but I do have them. Many people tend to wear clothes for a couple weeks, maybe a month, then they get rid of them. Where do these clothes go? You can give the clothes you don’t wear to a friend or to a Goodwill, they might take it. I agree that giving your clothes away to someone who’ll appreciate it is much better than throwing them out.
There are plenty of environmental issues that fast fashion is involved with. Water pollution, microplastics, and energy are the most prominent issues. Not only is fast fashion a bad thing for the environment, but it also comes with social impacts. It was brought out that fast fashion companies use a lot of child labor, that doesn’t sound good, right? I’m glad you agree, because it’s not. I’m not saying that companies should stop making clothes because of the waste they make, I’m saying that fast fashion companies shouldn’t exist. I mean to make clothes only for them to be thrown out like two months later?
Every year eighty billion new pieces of clothing are bought by people worldwide. A lot of the clothes that get thrown out end up in landfills instead of the hands of someone who’ll use them. Fast fashion clothing isn’t all made of cotton or anything biodegradable, there all synthetic materials that are either burned or do go into landfills; the input of this is eighty-seven percent. I’ve already said what I thought that fast fashion isn’t a good thing and we went over its impacts, I also talked about how it would be better for us to give clothes away to someone who’ll be happy to have them overthrowing them out. Adding to that, if you don’t like that the shirt is made of synthetic materials or don’t like that it’s a fast fashion item, if you want to give it away, but your friends don’t want it or Goodwill won’t take it than you could keep it and wear it to bed or if your just staying in, that’s a better option than just throwing it out.
