After nearly a decade of discovering and fighting monsters and enduring many multiyear waits, the “Stranger Things” finale has arrived with the release of its final season. However, it has stirred up a global debate: Was it the perfect goodbye or a missed opportunity?
Fans have been anticipating the final season of the beloved show since the creators announced it was in the works on Feb. 17, 2022. From then on, fans came together to form ideas and create theories about what they thought was going to happen next.
The first four episodes dropped Nov. 26, 2025, leaving fans with a massive cliffhanger. That cliffhanger ended up exceeding fans’ expectations for the remaining episodes of the season.
The next three episodes were released on Christmas Day; however, they did not go the way many fans had hoped. Episode seven ultimately earned the title of the lowest-rated episode of Stranger Things.
The final episode of the entire series was released on New Year’s Eve. It marked the end of a 10-year journey and revealed how the characters’ stories concluded. It was also the moment viewers learned who survived and who did not make it through the final battle.
Since that day, fans have flooded the internet with their final thoughts on the series finale. While there have been many positive reviews, a common theme among viewers is a feeling of complete dissatisfaction. One review claimed the creators spent too much time on “cheesy heart-to-heart” scenes and awkward dialogue rather than focusing on action.
Other fans were so disappointed with the ending that they convinced themselves and others that another episode would be released Jan. 7. They believe certain storylines were resolved too neatly and that a darker truth still remains. This belief led to a fan theory titled “Conformity Gate.”
The theory suggests Verna created an illusion in which everyone appears content and happy when, in reality, they are not. Supporters of the theory point to characters standing similarly to Henry, supposed plot holes and hidden codes. While many fans agree with this theory, I personally believe it reflects denial over how the show ended.
Although the ending felt somewhat rushed, it concluded the way it needed to. The series began with the characters playing their beloved game of Dungeons & Dragons, and that is exactly how it ended.
I do agree with fans on one major disappointment. Eleven’s ending should have been set in stone rather than left open to interpretation. Since it was left up to viewers, I believe she ultimately died. Mike’s story to the other characters did not align with what viewers actually saw. Kali was shown on the ground bleeding out, making the idea of her using her powers afterward difficult to believe.
While “Stranger Things” did not end the way many hoped, it still delivered powerful themes. The series consistently emphasized the importance of friendship and connection. It created a heartfelt, nostalgic journey that connected people across the world, making it especially difficult for fans to say goodbye.
“Stranger Things” will stand as a defining cultural phenomenon of the 2010s and 2020s. The directors, writers and, most importantly, the characters will be deeply missed on fans’ screens.
